Ukraine readies plan to charge $2.56 bln penalty from Gazprom

KIEV, Mar 12 (PRIME) -- Ukraine has prepared plans of legal measures to charge Russian gas giant Gazprom a U.S.$2.56 billion fine adjudged by the Stockholm arbitration court, President Pyotr Poroshenko said at a meeting with business on Monday.

“We have won a transit case and U.S. $4.6 billion is the amount of the loss, which Gazprom must compensate to Ukraine… Gazprom is delaying the payment under the court ruling in favor of Naftogaz Ukrainy. This is absolutely pointless. The money will be paid. Furthermore, Gazprom will pay half a million U.S. dollar sanctions daily for each day of payment delay. I assure you, Ukraine will get every single kopeck,” Poroshenko said.

The Stockholm arbitration court ordered earlier in March that Gazprom pay Ukrainian energy holding Naftogaz Ukrainy a $2.56 billion fine for non-shipping of gas.

Gazprom said it plans to contest the court decision and to void the contracts with Naftogaz Ukrainy in the Stockholm arbitration court.
